Responsible dog ownership

Pet ownership plays an incredibly important role in fostering peoples’ emotional and social wellbeing. Moreland rightly has many places where dog owners can exercise and enjoy their dog.

Council has clearly defined and publicised guidelines for walking dogs including a list of off-leash parks and rules for managing dog’s behaviour off-leash.

Most councils require dog owners to remove and dispose of dog poo. However, Moreland’s is not promoted on their website or in all parks and streets. See the Victorian Litter Association’s Litter Prevention Kit for more.

Council should better promote it’s local law:

39. Dog excrement

  1. Every person who is in a public place and for the time being has care of a dog must:
    1. carry and produce upon demand by an Authorised Officer, the means of picking up and removing any faeces that may be deposited by the dog; and
    2. remove and hygienically dispose of faeces deposited on or in a public place by the dog.

Penalty: 5 Penalty Units

    Of course I was going to comment on this, I always have plastic bags on me to give to the many dog owners who simply believe its ok to leave their dog poo in parks. Worst still, and disgustingly in children’s play areas. On the lead means you can control your dog, off the leads means you cant. Unfortunately the ranger(s)? of Moreland is extremely busy, and despite numerous on-line complaints via the
    Moreland Council portal, including accurate information and times these dog owners can be cautioned, I can count on one hand the amount of “reformed” dog owners, the rest just continue on leaving dog poo on sidewalks and in parks.

      Hi, it was interesting to read the local law because it could definitely be strengthened and certainly more widely promoted. Perhaps this is a case where a campaign with those footpath stickers would work well?
