Mel Yuan for Brunswick

Covid19 means the next term of Council will be like no other, and these economic realities need to guide a new set of priorities to help South Ward recover from restrictions. Small businesses need rate and fee relief, fast-tracking of approvals to re-start and adapt their businesses, and a coherent Council plan to support economic activity. Women have been economically harder hit by the pandemic. The needs and perspectives of women as workers, carers and community members should be included in guiding equitable recovery efforts. Moreland Council needs the best possible value for money from its operations as much of the community is experiencing tough times. Moreland needs mayor for four years, to be a truly effective advocate to the state government and carry out residents and ratepayers agenda for a full term of Council. My priorities on Council include better community consultation for open space planning (of parks and streetscapes) and improving Council governance of its many strategies and policies. Despite these many strategies, better master planning for facilities like community halls and sports facilities is still needed. The Brunswick community are educated, active and engaged and this enthusiasm needs to be better harnessed in planning city infrastructure through more robust consultation mechanisms. As a parent of two children at local schools, I want to see the needs of families better represented on Council. As a teacher and recently-retired leader in a youth organisation, I think the needs of children and young people should be better reflected in our urban design.
