Local government has an important role to play in the performing arts. Brunswick is blessed to have a thriving local music scene. There are important things Council can do to ensure it stays healthy:
- Get on board the Live Music Locator project and help connect audiences and performances
- Ensure local laws protect live music venues
- Diffuse the inevitable conflicts between residents and performance spaces – Melbourne has suffered from extensive conflicts with residents’ rights resulting in important venues closing
- Use Festivals & Events to provide meaningful performance opportunities for local artists
- Ensure that the Sydney Road Festival is open and accessible to community and cultural performances on preserved stages and it’s easy to get a slot
- Brunswick is home to Paradise Records, the Brunswick Ballroom, 3RR, and too many musicians, venues, and local businesses, to name just a few. They need a supportive ear and hand within council
- Where possible preserve and protect local venues. The Estonian House, a fantastic venue, may change hands and close as a live venue
- We should be listening to the industry for how we can maintain our unique and vibrant culture
