Rebecca reached out via email and here are my responses to her questions about the Israel-Palestinian conflict and Harm Reduction Victoria.

1. What’s your stance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

Like most people, I find the ongoing violence and lack of a political solution shocking. I have watched the situation for my 50+ years and despite every kind of attempt at peace, they have all failed.

2. I’m not sure whether you know, but Harm Reduction Vic operates in your ward, do you have any views on increasing harm reduction and education within the community? and would you ever consider supporting a safe injecting facility within the Merri-bek Council area?

Fiona Patten and Reason Party’s loss at the last state election is a loss for good government in Victoria. A more fact-based approach to social policy issues is welcome and harm minimisation is one area where Reason Party have made a big contribution to public debate. I am interested in drug legalisation impacts globally, but I think the jury is still out. A recent trip to the US reminded me of the havoc under-regulated drugs can have in a country without universal primary healthcare. However, evidence is key. But yes, safe injecting and other harm minimisation mechanisms are important public policy responses.
