The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is responsible for managing the electricity and gas systems and markets across Australia, ensuring Australians have access to affordable, secure, and reliable energy. Visit their website to get facts about electricity and gas prices and demand. /
We shouldn’t be arguing about the facts of electricity generation. /

In the last 12 months in Victoria, electricity has been generated from:
- 60% brown coal
- 27% wind
- 5% ‘industrial’ solar
- 4% hydro
- 2% each battery and gas
Note: excludes rooftop PV. See Renewables Penetration for a national snapshot of rooftop solar https://www.aemo.com.au/energy-systems/electricity/national-electricity-market-nem/data-nem/data-dashboard-nem

On the day this snapshot was taken (July 5, 2026):
- Tasmania had the lowest spot price and was exporting to Victoria. The orange transmission circle shows that a limit was reached
- Victoria had the second-lowest spot price and had a greater supply than demand. Victoria exported to South Australia and NSW, where demand was greater than supply

This is an excerpt from the 2026 “Integrated Systems Plan” which shows key current and proposed transmission, battery, solar, gas and wind projects. This is the roadmap to 2050 to reduce reliance on brown coal and increase production of renewable energy.
AEMO’s ISP is a roadmap for the NEM’s transition, and outlines an ‘optimal development path’ (ODP) for generation, storage and network investments to meet both consumer needs and government policies, at least cost, to 2050.
